Analysis: Egyptian Violence & U.S. Foreign Policy
EXCERPT: The United States gives billions in aid to Egypt, mostly military. The U.S. forgave $20 Billion in debts to Egypt for their (moral) support of the Gulf War in 1991.
Historically, and not uncommon for the region, Egyptian rulers have been corrupt dictators who became wealthy at the expense of the people where workers earn less than $2.00 a day. Despite receiving over $60 Billion in U.S. aid over 34 years, Egypt’s unemployment, inflation and poverty level remain high.
Like Iraq and Syria, the fundamental issues with internal violence between its people are religious differences. The one thing that the Egyptian people of both religious perceptions can agree on is they can’t stand the United States. A 2011 Pew survey showed that 82% of Egyptians have an “unfavorable” opinion of America.
